Caryl Ann Duvall LCMHC, CFLE, CIMHP, CCATP

Founder of Paperback Counseling, Caryl is a clinical mental health counselor and certified family life educator with a heart for helping people heal, grow, and reconnect. She holds a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor’s in Family Studies from Utah Valley University.

Caryl brings deep experience supporting individuals, couples, and families through emotional challenges, relationship dynamics, addiction, domestic violence, and child development. Her approach is integrative and trauma-informed, blending proven therapeutic techniques with compassion and real-world perspective.

She is certified in:

Caryl is especially attuned to how social environments impact wellbeing and equips clients with practical tools for lasting change. Outside of work, she enjoys mountain air, gardening, music, and time with her family.

Clay Swensen, M.S., ACMHC

Clay Swensen is an Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselor with a deep commitment to helping individuals navigate the challenges of trauma, mental health, and life transitions. With a rich background that includes 20 years of service as a law enforcement officer, Clay brings a unique, empathetic perspective to counseling—particularly in supporting first responders and those affected by trauma.

Clay earned a bachelor’s degree with Cum Laude honors from Broadview University and went on to complete a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with an emphasis in trauma from Grand Canyon University, graduating Magna Cum Laude and earning induction into the Epsilon Honor Society.

In clinical practice, Clay works with a wide range of clients, including teens and adults, who are navigating challenges such as depression, ADHD, anxiety, addiction, and major life transitions. With a trauma-informed approach and significant life experience, Clay creates a safe, supportive space for healing and personal growth. He understands and emphasizes the vital connection between the mind and body in the therapeutic process, helping clients develop greater awareness, regulation, and resilience.

Outside of the therapy room, he remains passionate about mental health advocacy and the ongoing development of effective strategies for trauma recovery and resilience.

In his personal life, Clay enjoys spending time with his wife of 23 years, his two daughters, and many pets. They enjoy travel, motorcycle rides, snowboarding, exercise, and anything outdoors.

Charlotte Malan, MFT Student Intern

Charlotte provides a compassionate, affirming space where individuals, partnerships, and families can explore challenges and create meaningful change. She is currently earning her degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Capella University, where she has been recognized on the President’s List for academic excellence.

With a background in Criminal Justice and over a decade of experience in finance and technology, Charlotte brings a grounded, real-world perspective to therapy. She meets clients with curiosity, respect, and genuine care—helping them navigate relationships, transitions, and personal growth with confidence and clarity.

Charlotte works with individuals (ages 12+), partnerships, and families, focusing on communication, anxiety, depression, faith transitions, gender identity, trauma, sexual wellness, intimacy, and neurodivergence. She draws from a systemic contextual lens and trauma evidence-based approaches to help clients connect more deeply with themselves and others.

Outside of therapy, Charlotte enjoys rollerskating, dancing, exploring the outdoors, and moon-gazing. She loves discovering new foods, watching shows that make her laugh, and spending time with her family, cats, and dog.
